Frequently Asked Questions

I had an IEP/504 Plan in high school. Will I receive the same services and accommodations at UMBC?

While IEPs and 504 Plans do not carry over to college, UMBC is required to provide you any reasonable accommodation that is necessary for equal access to education. A Disability Specialist will determine which support services you are eligible for after reviewing all submitted documentation of your disability.

What is acceptable documentation of a disability?

SSS reviews documentation on a case-by-case basis. However, acceptable documentation should be  current and reflect the following:

·         The credentials of the evaluator

·         A specific diagnosis

·         The diagnostic methodology used

·         The current functional impact on the individual

·         The expected progression or stability of the disability

·         Current and past accommodations, services, and/or medications

·         Recommendations for academic accommodations and services

Does UMBC provide testing for learning disabilities?

UMBC does not conduct or pay for testing for learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorders. However, we can provide you with a resource list of local educational testing organizations.

How does SSS receive my class schedule every semester and notify my instructors of my accommodations?

Each semester, after you have completed registration for classes you should complete an accommodation card with your course schedule and return it to the SSS office located in Math/Psych 213.  Once the card is received letters will be emailed to each instructor with your current accommodation letter on file.
