Initiatives @ UMBC supports several programs including:
UMBC BCPS STEM Project
The
UMBC-BCPS STEM partnership of the Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) and
the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is an innovative project
that facilitates the implementation, testing, refinement and dissemination
of promising practices for improving STEM student achievement as well as
teacher quality/retention in selected high-needs elementary, middle and high
schools in Baltimore County Public Schools. Centered on creating and
evaluating performance-based preservice teacher education (interns) programs
and sustainable professional development programs for teachers and
administrators, the project is designed to increase P-12 student achievement
in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by
increasing intern/teacher and administrator knowledge and confidence related
to these areas.
FIRST Lego League (FLL)
For
Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Lego League is
an international program, for children ages 9-14, that combines a hands-on,
interactive robotics program with a sports-like atmosphere. Teams
strategize, design, build, program, test and refine a fully autonomous robot
capable of completing the various missions of the FLL International "Robot
Game" Using the LEGO MINDSTORMS™
technology.
Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
PLTW's
mission is to creates dynamic partnerships with our nation's schools to
prepare students to be successful in science, engineering, and engineering
technology.
Sherman STEM Teacher Education Program
Through the generous support from George and Betsy
Sherman, the Sherman STEM Teacher Education Program will dramatically
increase the number of UMBC graduates who move immediately into science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) teaching careers in at-risk and
challenged schools in Baltimore City and throughout Maryland.
CESTEME
The Center for Excellence in Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics Education (CESTEME) is an interdisciplinary
collaborative venture apart of the University of Maryland, Baltimore
County (UMBC) Baltimore County Public School (BCPS)
National Science
Foundation (NSF) Mathematics, Science Partnership (MSP). Located on the
UMBC campus in Academic IV B Wing, the Center is an interdisciplinary
collaborative venture to improve science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) education.
