Are you an educator who seeks to be a teacher leader? Do you believe that reflective practice is critical for professional growth? Are you interested in fortifying content knowledge while expanding your understanding of promising educational practices? From content-focused, MHEC-funded extended instruction to five distinct graduate program offerings, UMBC offers professional development opportunities to assist new and experienced STEM teachers in staying ahead of the curve.
UMBC’s teacher quality programs offer graduate-level, discipline-specific credit for extended teacher professional development opportunities funded by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). These programs help Maryland teachers become more highly qualified science educators and feature: a spring preparation course, a ten-day summer practicum, follow-up sessions during the academic year, and a culminating Share Our Success Seminar and Poster Session hosted by the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences.
UMBC’s master of arts in education (MAE) program is designed for teachers who wish to examine and reflect upon their own classroom practice. Combining study in education and a range of academic disciplines, this program is aimed at practitioners who view critical inquiry as a major part of teachers' work. The program is not for those seeking administrative certification but rather for those interested in continuing work in classrooms and schools as a teacher leader.
