The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is offering an exciting new training program called STEP T for ELLs, which stands for Secondary Teacher Education and Professional Training for English Language Learners. This is a new program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA). The UMBC Department of Education has been working in consortium with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) to develop this training program.
The STEP T for ELLs Program helps secondary teachers of math, science, and social studies to provide effective instruction to ESOL students. This program provides professional development in the following areas:
Profiles of English Language Learners (ELLs)
Cross-cultural Communication
Literacy Development for ELLs
Teaching Strategies for ELLs
Adaptation of Materials for ELLs
Classroom Assessment for ELLs
This program builds an understanding of who our ELLs are and how to communicate across cultures effectively. In addition, the unique design of our training program exposes teachers to instructional strategies that are specific to their content area.
