Overview

Currently, UMBC is working closely with the Howard County Public School System, which is located in a suburb of Baltimore near the university, to design teacher training programs for in-service mathematics, science, social studies, and ESOL teachers. Within UMBC’s Education Department, the ESOL Program Professors are working to work collaboratively with the Math, Science, and Social Studies Education Professors in order to design a series of ESOL modules that are specifically targeted to the teaching of English Language Learners (ELLs) in the various content areas at the secondary level. The goal of the development of these modules is to improve the ability of the content area teachers at the secondary level in HCPSS to provide effective instruction to English Language Learners (ELLs) following the MSDE content and English language proficiency standards. It is through the cooperative development and implementation of this series of teacher training modules by a team of UMBC ESOL and content area professors, HCPSS ESOL, Math, Science, and Social Studies teachers, and MSDE Title III Specialists that UMBC is working toward the goal of providing high-quality professional development for secondary content teachers to improve the academic achievement as well as literacy and language development of English Language Learners (ELLs) in the state of Maryland. Once the modules are piloted in HCPSS, they will be fully developed for both face-to-face and online delivery, infused throughout the UMBC, Education Department Curriculum, and implemented statewide to all school districts in Maryland.
