Program Modules

The project design for “STEP T for ELLs” includes the development of “ESOL modules” which are instructional units that are equivalent to one graduate credit each with approximately 15 hours of instruction that focus on effective instructional practices for English Language Learners (ELLs) in each of the major content areas at the secondary level. The ESOL modules, which will be designed for both face to face (f2f) and online delivery, will be infused into the curriculum currently being developed by the UMBC Education Department for methodology courses designed for teaching in-service math, science, and social studies teachers and pre-service teacher candidates at the secondary level. Each module will provide instruction in the following seven areas:

  1. Who are your English Language Learners (ELLs)?
  2. Learning a language while also receiving instruction through it
  3. Literacy Development for English Language Learners
  4. Cross-cultural Communication
  5. Strategies for Teaching English Language Learners
  6. Adaptation of Materials for English Language Learners
  7. Classroom Assessment of English Language Learners

the modules being developed are content-specific module.  These content-specific modules will be specifically designed for each content area and infused into the curriculum of a 3-credit secondary content area teaching methodology course and can stand alone as one-credit professional development training courses. In addition, they will have both general ESOL teaching methodology and specific content related methodology in teaching English Language Learners (ELLs).

The three STEP T for ELLs modules are;

  1. Science Module
  2. Math Module
  3. Social Studies Module
