David Hoffman
Assistant Director of Student Life for Civic Agency

David's passion is helping students discover their power and potential as self-governing citizens, agents of change and people who can make a difference in others' lives. As an undergraduate at UCLA, David got involved in student government, serving as the student member of the University of California Board of Regents and as Student Body President. He went on to earn a master's degree from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government and a law degree from the Harvard Law School. After two years practicing law at a big Los Angeles firm David decided to leave the "billable hours" behind and launch a new career in leadership development and community building. Prior to joining UMBC in 2003, David served as Vice President of the nonprofit Consensus Organizing Institute and founder/President of the nonprofit Create the Commonwealth. A native of Southern California who moved to the Baltimore area in 2003, David never saw a snowfall until he was 21 years old and still finds cold weather strange and exciting! Stop by his office on The Commons' 3rd floor to talk about baseball, politics, the pros and cons of going to law school and how to change the world.

Kathryn Peria
Graduate Coordinator for Student Events

Kathryn loves working with students and watching them develop into strong, confident leaders who make a difference on campus. She joins the Office of Student Life after transitioning from being a UMBC student leader herself to being the graduate advisor to the Student Events Board. During her undergraduate years, Kathryn was a double major in Biology and Art History before she took a complete 360 in her academic career and found her passion in Cultural Anthropology and Sociology. Her research projects focused on HIV/AIDS among the women of Thailand, tuberculosis in cities with high immigration rates, and fertility among the Ndebele tribe. In college, she was also highly involved in Student Life, Student Government, and Service Learning. Born in Manila, Philippines and raised in Annapolis, MD, she considers both Manila and Annapolis home; and these two cities explain her true appreciation for seafood and being by the water. Kathryn is currently working on her M.A. in Applied Sociology with a focus on Medical and Urban Sociology as well as a Post-Baccalaureate Program in Gender and Women's Studies focusing on Transnational Aging and Gender Dynamics among Aging Populations. As a member of the Office of Student Life, she works closely with the talented and hard-working student leaders of the Student Events Board. During her free time, she enjoys cooking, baking (cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops are her current specialties!), going on food adventures, visiting NYC, listening to (live) music, spending quality time in the RAC, hearing people's stories, engaging in fun activities that happen on the beach and on grass, rooting for the LA Lakers, being silly and ridiculous, fitting into small spaces, making people feel special, and spending time with friends and family.

Jan Kefauver
Administrative Assistant

Jan is new to working in higher education. In fact, she spent most of her working life as an Administrative Assistant in large law firms in Chicago, Illinois, commuting by train every day from a northwest suburb. She got married and moved to Maryland, and worked in a family owned 8 person law office in Westminster. With the downturn of the economy, her position at the law office was eliminated which forced her to make some changes in her career path. She has been interested in the energy of the school environment ever since her kids attended elementary school, and she decided to gamble on a new direction in her life after working in the area of law for over 30 years. Jan is thrilled that she took the chance and loves her new life at UMBC watching students at the point in their lives where everything is possible in their future. She enjoys spending her non-work hours with her husband, John, sons, Cory & Sam, her German Shepherd, cat and 6 chickens. She loves reading, gardening and watching her boys play Lacrosse. Stop in any time to say hi to Jan!

Erin further grew this passion by working for Residential Life at UMBC as both a graduate assistant and a Community Director while earning her Master's degree in Applied Sociology (May 2009). In August 2010, Erin transitioned her passion to serve students through the Office of Student Life, where she wants every student to understand that each person makes a difference! During her spare time, Erin enjoys cooking/baking/eating, adventuring with her husband, salsa dancing, traveling around the world, and laughing!
