Cultivating Cultural Competence: Effective Cross-Cultural Communication and Interaction
Learning Goals

  • To learn the Four Layers of Diversity at UMBC and in our society.
  • To learn basic Western and Non-Western Cultural Values.
  • To increase awareness about the need to broaden one’s associations.
  • To review resources that will increase our ability to communicate and interact
  • cross-culturally.
  • To complete a Personal Action Plan for  professional and personal growth.

 

Prejudice and Discrimination Reduction Introductory Skill-Building

Diversity: Who, What & Why It Matters
Learning Goals

  • Establish ground rules for respectful communication and dialogue.
  • Become familiar with the Four Layers of Diversity and Western/Non-Western Cultural Values.
  • Discuss our personal experiences with prejudice and discrimination based on our  majority/minority social identities and status.
  • Define privilege, prejudice and discrimination as it relates to social status.
  • Identify and review tools/resources for continued learning and growth.
  • Complete a Personal Action Plan for our future growth and development.

Learning Goals

  • Establish ground rules for respectful communication and dialogue.
  • Define privilege as it relates to social status.
  • Test our current knowledge of educational and societal equity.
  • Explore how privilege can connect to prejudice and discrimination.
  • Identify and review tools/resources for continued learning and growth.
  • Commit to completing a personal action plan to develop a better understanding of how privilege impacts our relationships with others.

  • To learn/review the Four Layers/Dimensions of Diversity within the UMBC community and our society.
  • To learn/review basic Western and Non-Western cultural values.
  • To assess the extent of our contact with diverse people.
  • To examine our reactions to the cultural characteristics of others.
  • To learn to observe others more accurately to become true advocates/allies as student leaders.

For Faculty and Staff Department Heads, Managers and Supervisors:

Cultural Competence: The Key to Diversity Management
Learning Goals

  • To increase awareness about the need to broaden one’s associations.
  • To learn about the Cycle of Oppression.
  • To learn the Four Layers/Dimensions of Diversity within UMBC and our society.
  • To learn basic Western and Non-Western cultural values.
  • To learn concrete steps for increasing your cultural competence.
  • To identify areas of professional competence required of effective supervisors.
  • To learn to utilize the Professional Leadership Pyramid.
  • To complete a Personal Action Plan for Personal and Professional Growth.

How to Become a Culturally Competent Supervisor
Learning Goals

  • To learn how to improve communication between diverse supervisors and staff.
  • To learn about the Cycle of Oppression.
  • To identify areas of professional competence required of effective supervisors.
  • To learn the generational groups that exist within today’s workplace.
  • To learn to utilize the Professional Leadership Pyramid.
