A
Brief History
The University of Maryland Baltimore county's African
Students Association was a vision formed by a group
of African students on the campus, attempting to bring
a sense of community and belonging to a growing amount
of African students on the campus. The goal of this
establishment then expanded to promote cultural awareness
of Africa and its people on the campus, to advocate
a strong leadership in organizations on campus and of
course to build and bond with fellow African students.
The African Students Association (or ASA as it is commonly
referred to) is open to all UMBC students. As Africa
is a continent of many different ethnic groups, cultures,
and religions, those students who express an interest
in Africa and would like to learn more are encouraged
to participate in this organization.
A view Inside
Various countries in Africa including Nigeria, Cameroon,
Liberia, Tanzania, South Africa, Ethiopia, Eritrea,
Ghana, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Zambia, Botswana and many
others are represented in UMBC's ASA. The students in
the group are of a diverse and energetic nature. ASA
prides itself on being a major cultural establishment
for the students of UMBC. Through the pursuit of higher
education, academic excellence, community service and
networking with other students through the African Diaspora
we are able to unite and promote unity amongst ourselves.
