An exercise to exemplify the importance of cooperative learning strategies

Students were divided in groups of 5.
Then each team counted off from 1 to 5 within the group.
People with same # formed an ‘expert’ group.
Each group solved a set of given problems (every group had a different problem).
Students went back to their original group and taught the rest of the members their area of expertise.
Each group had to solve a problem collectively. The solution of the problem could only be reached if everyone in the group were experts in their particular area.
Afterwards, each student solved an individual problem. The solution of the problem was dependent of the ability of other group members to share what they had learned.

A brief discussion took place at the end of the period.
<>Problems were based on logic and mathematics.<>

Goal: Expose students to teach and learn from their piers. Additionally the exercises increases awareness of the different levels of verbal, auditory and kinesthetic interactions individuals need to effectively communicate, provide every group member the oppurnity of actively participate and enhance the students listening ability.
