UMBC Chess Team is six times winner of the Pan-American Intercollegiate Championship.
The Pan-Am Intercollegiate Championships was established after the merger of the Intercollegiate Chess League and the HYPD (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth) League in in 1945. In 1946, the first Pan-Am Intercollegiate Championships took place, and was won by City College of New York.
