Registrants List, Registration, and Deadlines for the 2009 Maryland Scholastic Chess Spectacular The current list of registrants for the upcoming 2009 Chess Spectacular is available here. This list is updated frequently. Registration for the Chess Spectacular (available here) is open up to the day of the Spectacular. Due to the current number of registrants, late registrants will not be charged late fees nor have a Bye applied to Rd. 1. For more information, please see the event flyer. |

UMBC Wins the 2009 President's Cup The UMBC Chess team has beaten the University of Texas-Dallas (UTD) to win the 2009 President's Cup. Entering the final round down 5-6 against UTD, UMBC beat UTD 2.5-1.5, resulting in a 7.5-7.5 tie in individual points and a 2-2 tie on match points. The head-to-head encounter of Round 3 broke the tie, resulting in a UMBC victory. UMBC has now won five of the nine years the competition has existed. 2009 President's Cup - The Final Four of College Chess After tieing for first place with the University of Texas-Dallas (UTD) in the 54th Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship last December, the UMBC Chess team is preparing for a rematch. It will face off against UTD again, along with the University of Texas-Brownsville and Stanford University, in the 2009 President's Cup, April 4-5, at the University of Texas-Dallas. 2009 Maryland Scholastic Chess Spectacular Open to students grades 1-12, the Maryland Scholastic Chess Spectacular (May 10) provides Maryland students the opportunity to represent their schools in an SS style tournament. Players must bring their own regulation sets and clocks. Spectators are free and welcome! For more information see the MSCS flyer. |

Chess Week! Join us in The Commons as we celebrate Chess Week 2008, a week's worth of events, activities, and giveaways leading up to the 2008 President's Cup, Final Four of Chess on April 5th & 6th. Events include an opening kickoff on Monday, March 31 with FREE t-shirts to the first 50 students who attend, a giant chess match between some of UMBC's finest chess team members, and much, much more. ChessFest 2007 Last Sunday, October 14, UMBC held ChessFest event. Four UMBC Chess Fellows Sergey Erenburg, Pawel Blehm, Katerina Rohonyan and Bruci Lopez provided chess instructions to over a hundred of children from different schools of Maryland, Virginia and DC. The director of International School of Chess Dr.Korenman conducted a lecture for chess coaches. After the lectures, the public had an opportunity to enjoy a simultaneous matches against Sergey Erenburg and Katerina Rohonyan, followed by two exhibition matches. 2007 UMBC Chess Championship The 2007 UMBC Chess Championship was won for the third consecutive time by GM Pawel Blehm, with a score of 4.5/5.0. He only conceded a draw to FM Tegshsuren Enkhbat, a teammate on the Baltimore Kingfishers in the US Chess League. Freshman Aaron Kahn scored an impressive 4.0/5.0 to tie for 2nd place with Enkhbat and Daniel Yeager, Pennsylvania's top junior player. The U1800 Section was jointly won by Carl Hudec and David Hevey, while Sophomore Alisha Crowley was the top UMBC student in the section. Freshman Helong Li won top honors in the Beginner's Section.
