The 2007 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Chess Championship just ended at Miami Dade College. The good news is UMBC placed second out of 28 teams and advances to the Final Four (April 5-6).
The bad news is that UMBC lost to UTD-A last night 1.5-2.5 in a close match, and incredibly tied Duke 2-2 in Rd 6 when the Polish Magician lost on time due to confusion over the new time controls (Game/120mins with 30sec increment per move).
In the last round, UTD and NYU quickly agreed to a tie, securing UTD's 1st place and NYU's entry to the final four. Meanwhile UTD-B tied Miami Dade.
There were a lot of technology glitches with the Monroi wireless devices for uploading moves to the internet; usually they work well.
5.5 points: UTD-A
4.5 points: UMBC-A, NYU, UTD-B
(UMBC has highest tie breaks, thus placing 2nd)
4.0 points: Brownsville, Miami Dade, Yale, UMBC-B
