9/12/09-9/13/09 - Pumpkinfest Tournament

UMBC won its first game of the tournament against Bloomsburg University. The second game against D-1 University of Delaware resulted in a loss but the UMBC girls were persistent in their efforts despite the tough match. The third game was a win over Lock Haven University. Additionally, the UMBC girls scrimmaged the Philadelphia Women's team and learned many new skills from their experienced players. UMBC anxiously awaits their next match against UMD b-side.

9/5/09 - Severn Challenge Cup

The ladies of UMBC started the tournament with a win over Saint Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM). UMBC was l defeated by Towson University in their second match of the day. UMBC and SMCM, both low on numbers, combined to take on Towson in the final match of the tournament, a Towson victory. The tournament was overall a success for the team, not only pulling off a win but allowing the many rookies to get game experience before heading into the matrix season.

9/1/09 - Upcoming season!

UMBC Women’s Rugby is about to start their 2009 Fall season. With the immense progress made throughout the 2009 Spring season, the upcoming months of rugby look promising for UMBC.

Fitness

To train for rugby, one must understand the principles of fitness training and the specific demands of a rugby game. A rugby game lasts 80 minutes. On average a player will cover some 4-7 miles in a high level game. Approximately 80% of that distance will be covered at around 70-80% of maximum speed with the remaining 20% split between full speed and substantially less than full speed. The length of time spent working before the next stoppage in play varies between 5 to 30 seconds for the majority of the game. Coupled with these aerobic and anaerobic demands are strength demands that occur at the tackle, in the loose, and at line outs and scrums. Players must be fit enough and durable enough to handle these demands in order to play well and to fully enjoy the game. Data has been generated to give us a more precise understanding of the physical demands of competitive Rugby.

In a typical game:

  • The ball is in play about 30 minutes
  • Recovery time between activities averages less than 40 seconds
  • 15-20 scrums and 20-30 lineouts, each of 15-20 seconds
  • Forwards spend 50% of their activity in scrums and lineouts, and 50% in support
  • Forwards cover 4-6 miles during a game
  • Backs cover 4-5 miles in a game, 30% (primarily on attack) sprinting

(Paragraph and statistics taken from George Mason Rugby)

Fitness Testing:

A good way to measure base fitness, as well as keep track of your progress while you work out, is to undergo a Beep Test. A beep test involves continuous running between two lines 20 meters apart in time to recorded beeps. The time between recorded beeps decrease each minute (level).

Your results can then be recorded and converted to your VO2max, or the highest volume of oxygen a person can consume during exercise. This number gives you a good idea about the shape you are in (you can see how you stack up within your age group here.). According to Sports Coach, the ideal VO2max for rugby is 55 ml/kg/min.
