The Spring 2009 season is in full swing! The women opened their season with a tough game on the D.C. mall against George Washington College. A well fought game, the ladies lost. Over the weekend of March 13th, the Women's Rugby team traveled to Savannah, Georgia to battle it out in a two-day tournament against teams from all over the East Coast and into the Mid-West. Losing the first match on Saturday morning against Florida State didn't bring the ladies down. They held their heads high after their second game, defeating Mary Washington College. Their last game on Sunday against Virginia Tech was one of hard-work and determination, an unfortunate loss. Last weekend, the ladies traveled to Lancaster, PA to play in Franklin & Marshall's Buggy Bash tournament. They started strong, defeating F&M, the host team, 10 to 5. A latter loss to Salisbury eliminated the ladies from the runnings for placement, though. Come support the women this weekend as they battle Towson University at 1 pm in Towson.

Fitness

To train for rugby, one must understand the principles of fitness training and the specific demands of a rugby game. A rugby game lasts 80 minutes. On average a player will cover some 4-7 miles in a high level game. Approximately 80% of that distance will be covered at around 70-80% of maximum speed with the remaining 20% split between full speed and substantially less than full speed. The length of time spent working before the next stoppage in play varies between 5 to 30 seconds for the majority of the game. Coupled with these aerobic and anaerobic demands are strength demands that occur at the tackle, in the loose, and at line outs and scrums. Players must be fit enough and durable enough to handle these demands in order to play well and to fully enjoy the game. Data has been generated to give us a more precise understanding of the physical demands of competitive Rugby.

In a typical game:

  • The ball is in play about 30 minutes
  • Recovery time between activities averages less than 40 seconds
  • 15-20 scrums and 20-30 lineouts, each of 15-20 seconds
  • Forwards spend 50% of their activity in scrums and lineouts, and 50% in support
  • Forwards cover 4-6 miles during a game
  • Backs cover 4-5 miles in a game, 30% (primarily on attack) sprinting

Fitness Testing:

A good way to measure base fitness, as well as keep track of your progress while you work out, is to undergo a Beep Test. A beep test involves continuous running between two lines 20 meters apart in time to recorded beeps. The time between recorded beeps decrease each minute (level).

Your results can then be recorded and converted to your VO2max, or the highest volume of oxygen a person can consume during exercise. This number gives you a good idea about the shape you are in (you can see how you stack up within your age group here.). According to Sports Coach, the ideal VO2max for rugby is 55 ml/kg/min.
