What
is SOLID
Waste...?| ^
People now belong to what they call the 'throwaway society.'
Much of what you buy, quickly becomes waste-and you just throw it away. Some waste gets recycled (used again), but most ends up in garbage dumps so huge they're like mountains. (This picture is to help you get a clearer understanding of what solid waste actually is--disgusting huh?) ^ |
Solid waste is basically anything that is solid. The most important solid waste product is trash (ex: paper, human sewage- 'poop', etc.). Most cities develop a lot of trash everyday. If it just sits on the roadside or gets put into a landfill, it could be around for decades, and could release dangerous chemicals into the soil. These chemicals can in turn, threaten the lives of the people that are living or working near where these landfills are. If toxic, or poisonous, chemicals get into the water supply, it is possible to put the health of large populations of people, animals and plants health at severe risk, even for people, animals, and plants hundreds of miles away! Eventually, some, if not all of this solid waste will reach the Bay, sooner or later.
