| 10-Minute Play Reading
The UMBC Department of Theatre is pleased to announce a special inaugural event. We are celebrating our first annual 10-minute Play Competition with a staged reading of the thousand-dollar prizewinner, Fin and Euba, as well as the four plays chosen as finalists for the award.
Selected for their clarity of action, dramatic strength and expansive portrayal of young female characters, these plays represent the very best of the over 170 national contenders for the award. The judges read these scripts as anonymous submissions, so it was a pleasant surprise to learn that a local playwright, Audrey Cefaly of Bowie, had submitted the winning play.
Fin and Euba along with the finalists, La Llorona by Monica Flory, Liberal Arts by Don LaPlant, Pipe Dream by JudyLee Oliva and Lil’ Heroes by Stephanie Timm are exciting new works by accomplished emerging writers. The winning play will be included, and the finalists given top consideration for inclusion, in an anthology of short plays by major American playwrights that highlight young female characters in new and challenging dramatic roles. Read the playwrights' bios here.
The staged reading is free and takes place Friday, February 3 rd at 4:00 and 7:30 and Saturday, February 4 th at 8:00 in the UMBC Theatre. For directions see http://www.umbc.edu/theatre/directions.html. Discussion of the plays with the directors and area dramaturgs will follow the performances.
