UMBC announces the 3rd annual

10-Minute Play Festival New Theatrical Works for Young Actresses and All Audiences
Featuring the winning play from the IN10 National Play Competition
and a new short play for young actresses by noted American playwright.
THE COMPETITION
As the cornerstone for our IN10 FESTIVAL, the UMBC Department of Theatre seeks 10-minute plays written for female characters age 16 to 30 that feature clearly defined roles for young women.
We strongly encourage playwrights to create a wide variety of roles representing young women from all social classes, ethnic backgrounds and in all kinds of physical bodies. We are most interested in scripts that explore relationships between women through roles that are not widely available in contemporary play texts.
Since there is a dearth of texts for young female actors, we plan to edit an anthology of much needed 10-minute texts for young actresses. We anticipate that this text will be used in colleges and universities across the country.
We ask that you use this form so that we might read these scripts as blind submissions. Please be sure the author’s name appears only on the application cover page. Also we are asking each writer to provide us with the basic action of the play because we are looking specifically for conflict driven drama.
An example of a concise basic action is as follows:
“Manager” is about Charlie (18), the only child of a single mother dying from breast cancer whose only wish is to die at home. In order to keep her promise, Charlie must convince a social worker, Rita (25), that she can care for her mother. Rita has just graduated with her MSW and is caught between her desire to assist Charlie and her supervisor’s insistence that the family will be best served in the hospital system.
Please download and complete the application form here.
Please send one copy of the script along with a completed two-page application form to:
