Overview

*As of January 1, 2012, the CFP Board requires all new students and challengers to complete a financial plan development course.

The CFP Financial Plan Development Course meets the CFP board’s financial plan development course requirement by covering the development of a financial plan from initial client meeting to monitoring the plan. A special emphasis is placed on identification of financial issues and integration of practical recommendations to improve the client’s financial situation. In addition, the course reviews some components of each of the various aspects of a financial plan, including analysis of cash flow and balance sheet, income tax calculations, survivor needs, disability income issues, health issues, long-term care needs, property and casualty risk management, education, other goals, retirement planning, estate planning, investment analysis, and portfolio construction

Exempt from completing the “Capstone Course”

  • Students who have enrolled in the CFP Certification Professional Education Program before January 1, 2012, and complete the program by December 31, 2014.
  • Students enrolled in the CFP Certification Professional Education Program prior to January 1, 2012, regardless of their enrollment status (i.e., dismissed, inactive, active, complete, graduate)
  • Students who enroll in one course of the CFP program (including CFP challenge courses) prior to January 1, 2012, regardless of their status prior to January 1, 2012 (i.e., dismissed, inactive, active, complete, graduate)
  • Individuals who challenge the CFP® Certification Examination prior to January 1, 2012*

All students, especially challengers, should be advised to confirm their status and qualifications to take the CFP® Certification Examination with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the content found within the Financial Planning curriculum and effectively apply and integrate this information in the formulation of a financial plan
  • Effectively communicate the financial plan, both orally and in writing, including information based on research, peer, colleague, or simulated client interaction and/or results emanating from the synthesis of materials
  • Collect all necessary and relevant qualitative and quantitative information required to develop a financial plan
  • Analyze personal financial situations, evaluating clients’ objectives, needs, and values to develop an appropriate strategy within the financial plan
  • Demonstrate logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to a specific problem
  • Evaluate the impact of economic, political, and regular issues with regard to the financial plan
  • Apply CFP Board Financial Planning Practice Standards to the financial planning process
