Overview

The UMBC Training Centers Cybersecurity Academy was established to address the cyber workforce training needs of the military, the intelligence community, federal civilian agencies, and the commercial sector in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Building on UMBC's designation as a National Center of Excellence in Information Assurance Education and Research, the Cybersecurity Academy delivers practical training programs to develop today's and tomorrow's cyber workforce, preparing participants for careers in this high demand industry.

The Demand

“Cyberspace touches nearly every part of our daily lives. It’s the broadband networks beneath us and the wireless signals around us, the local networks in our schools and hospitals and businesses, and the massive grids that power our nation. It’s the classified military and intelligence networks that keep us safe, and the World Wide Web that has made us more interconnected than at any time in human history. We must secure our cyberspace to ensure that we can continue to grow the nation’s economy and protect our way of life.”

– President Obama, from the White House Cybersecurity website

With the recent establishment of the U.S. Cyber Command at Ft. Meade, Maryland, and as base realigned and closure (BRAC) activities continue to put more pressure on the regional workforce, the demand for qualified Cybersecurity professionals in the area continues to grow.

The Department of Defense, federal civilian agencies and contractors that support their efforts need to have a well prepared workforce of trained and certified cyber professionals to fulfill their important missions.
