Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) Preparation

Course Description | Engineering Home

Overview

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) is a highly sought after certification for those engineers wanting to be recognized for their education, experience, and knowledge in the highly competitive field of Systems Engineering. Obtaining a CSEP is not easy, but that’s what makes it so valuable. You have to demonstrate your real world experience via a lengthy application and three references. Then you need to pass a two-hour, 120-question, multiple-choice exam. This course helps prepare potential candidates for this demanding process by becoming familiar with the INCOSE SE Handbook version 3.1 which is the basis for the examination. Students will also learn the requirements for a successful CSEP application.

On completing this class, the participant will:

  • Have a good grasp of the fundamentals of Systems Engineering, including the understanding of systems engineering management and systems engineering processes, from the INCOSE perspective
  • Be able to apply the INCOSE SE Handbook to a project
  • Understand INCOSE CSEP application process
  • Be well prepared for the CSEP exam

Instructor

Mr. Paul Martin, CSEP, has more than 20 years experience as a General Engineer specializing in Systems Development and Procurement in the Defense Acquisition community. He is presently supporting an Army Program Office as a Lead Systems Engineer. For the past few years he has also been a part time Adjunct Professor of the UMBC Systems Engineering Graduate Programs where he developed and teaches a graduate level course entitled: ENEE 663 System Implementation, Integration, and Test. To round out his busy schedule, he is also the Program Director for the Chesapeake chapter of INCOSE.  He earned a Masters of Science in Systems Engineering along with a Certificate in Software Systems Engineering from George Mason University in 1994. He also has a DAWIA Level III certification in Systems Planning, Research, Development and Engineering.

Course Materials

Mr. Martin will be mainly using the Systems Engineering Handbook V3.1 Tutorial material, an approved INCOSE Technical Product, developed by the Hampton Roads Area (HRA) Chapter.  Over 400 slides of instruction will cover the whole INCOSE SE Handbook in a logical sequence of topics.  Course materials and notes are provided by the instructor and are included in the cost of the course. Although not a requirement the student is encouraged to join INCOSE because of the cost savings in the application and testing fees. Also as an INCOSE member they will be able to get the latest information on the CSEP process and INCOSE System Engineering Handbook via INCOSE Connect.
