Center for Cybersecurity Training

Overview

UMBC Training Centers has launched a bold new training venture to address the tremendous need for Cyber professionals in the workforce: the UMBC Cyber Academy.  The UMBC Cyber Academy will feature full time, intensive training and educational programs designed to prepare students for immediate employment in Cybersecurity job specialties within government and industry.

The Cyber Academy will develop civilians and military personnel from a basic competence with computers and technology up to the level of a competent, entry-level professional in one of five Computer Network Operations (CNO) job specialties. These job specialties are closely aligned with the recent National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) release of the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) framework.

Cyber Academy Phases of Study

The Cyber Academy Programs consist of two distinct phases of study: Phase I and Phase II.  The Programs are offered to either individual students (subject to admission), or to employers sending their employees individually or in groups (cohorts).

Most students will take Phase I and Phase II consecutively without interruption between phases.  However, students (or their employers) have the option of completing the phases independently.  For example, some students may elect to work at a full time IT position for a period of time after Phase I to gain experience before returning to complete Phase II.  Alternatively, some students may have some combination of academic study and work experience that gives them an equivalency to Phase I.  In this case, the student may elect to take a few individual courses at Training Centers to fill in the gaps as needed to prepare for Phase II Study.

Phase I: Core Skills Training

Phase I takes the student from a state of basic computer aptitude up to a level of a competent, professional IT generalist. After Phase I students are well prepared for employment in various IT roles such as system/network administrator, security administrator, or computer/IT support technician.

Core Components of Phase I training include:

  • General Preparatory Training – critical thinking, logic, problem solving, discrete math, oral and written communications.
  • Core Technical Training & Assessment – OS theory, hardware and computer architecture, networking, network security fundamentals, basic programming and scripting, Windows fundamentals and administration, Linux fundamentals and administration, wireless, basic network attack methodology, etc.
  • Legal, Policy, Ethics, Oversight Training – Cybersecurity law and policy, Cyber warfare, ethics, active defense policy, etc.

Phase II: Cyber Specialty Training

Phase II takes the IT generalist described above up to the level of a competent Cyber professional. Phase II graduates are well prepared for employment at commercial or government organizations in the roles of Cyber Analyst, Cyber Operator or Cyber Developer, depending on the specialty completed.

UMBC Training Centers currently offers the following Phase II Specialty Programs:

  • Cyber Analyst: Defense – intermediate attack methodology, network security administration, device hardening best practices, IDS/IPS administration and monitoring, incident handling, live/postmortem forensics, packet analysis, vulnerability assessment procedures and tools, etc.
  • Cyber Analyst: Vulnerability Assessment – intermediate attack methodology, network security administration, IDS/IPS administration and monitoring, live/postmortem forensics, packet analysis, personal security products, router/firewall configuration analysis, intermediate scripting, databases, datamining, etc.
  • Cyber Analyst: Malware & Forensics – intermediate attack methodology, malware analysis and reverse engineering, Assembly, sandboxing and virtualization, incident handling, live/postmortem forensics, packet analysis, etc.
  • Cyber Operator – intermediate attack methodology, penetration testing, live/postmortem forensics, packet analysis, personal security products, router/firewall configuration analysis, Assembly, virtualization, malware triage, personal security products, incident handling, etc.
  • Cyber Developer – intermediate attack methodology, C programming, Python, Assembly, computer organization, data structures, virtualization, code vulnerability identification, reverse engineering, static code analysis, etc.

Cyber Academy Student and Employer Support Services

  • Screening and Selection – aptitude assessment, current knowledge assessment, initial security screening and a National Agency Check (NAC), evaluation of education and work history, etc.
  • Clearance Processing – facilitation of the security clearance process in cooperation with a sponsoring agency
  • Internship – in conjunction with government, military, industry partners. Three to five months in duration, directly applying skills learned through classroom training to real-world activities.
  • Placement – assisting with placement of trained, certified and experienced Cyber professionals into government, military and industry Cybersecurity positions.

Audience

This program has two core audiences:

  • Current employees of organizations who require additional hands-on training to meet existing cyber workforce gaps. These employees can have little IT background and be taken through the entire program, or can come with basic foundational skills and moved directly into training for a specfic specialty area.
  • Individuals seeking to enter the fields of information technology and cybersecurity who are interested in employment with government agencies, government contractors and commercial enterprises in the region. While Cyber is the primary focus, this program provides excellent preparation for work in any commercial or civilian IT organization.
