Course Description | Outline | Software Development Training | IT HomeOverviewThis is an introductory course in computer programming using the Java language. This course is appropriate for computer-savvy individuals who want to learn how to program, and for those who have programmed in other languages and wish to learn Java. At the end of this course, students will be able to:
Class Format and ScheduleThis is a self-paced, instructor-mentored course. Students access the course lessons through UMBC Training Centers' Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS). A textbook will be mailed to the student shortly after successful class registration. Students complete lessons independently, working at their own pace. Students may post questions to the class discussion forum, or directly to the instructor. Students submit Java programming exercises to the instructor for review and feedback. The course consists of 12 lessons (see course outline). Students will have 4 months from the date of course registration to complete the course. It is recommended that students complete at least one lesson per week, and therefore complete the course within 12 weeks. Nothing prevents the student from working at a faster pace and completing in the course in as little as 4 to 5 weeks. System RequirementsStudents should have their own computer (or use of a computer) with reliable Internet access, to complete the class lessons and Java programming exercises. Minimum computer requirements are: Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux system with 1 GB RAM, 1.6 GHz CPU, and 10 GB free disk space. PrerequisitesStudents should have experience performing basic computer management tasks on a modern operating system such as Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux. Students should have good problem solving and logical thinking skills. Prior computer programming experience is helpful but not required.
