Overview

This 8 week course teaches students how to program using the Java language. It covers both of the core classes required to prepare students for the Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP): SL-110 (Fundamentals of the Java Programming Language) and SL-275 (Java Programming Language). This course is intended for students with little or no programming experience.

The first half of the course teaches the significance of object-oriented programming, the keywords and constructs of the Java programming language, and the steps required to create simple Java programs. The second half of the course covers Java syntax; object-oriented programming with Java; creating graphical user interfaces (GUIs), exceptions, file input/output (I/O), and threads; and networking. The course features the Java Platform, Standard Edition 6 (Java SE 6) platform, and utilizes the Java SE Development Kit 6 (JDK 6) product. The students perform the course lab exercises using the NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

The course is practical, with many examples and programming exercises. Students taking this course will receive a solid basis in the Java programming language upon which to base continued work and training.

Target Student

This course is the ideal starting point for individuals with little or no programming experience who wish to pursue a career in Software and/or Web development using Java. Java programmers are in high demand in both corporate and government IT Departments.

Optional Certification Exam

This course helps prepare students for the Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) for the Java Platform, Standard Edition 6 Examination.
