Overview

This class comprehensively covers the fundamental tools and concepts of Linux, including the usage, configuration, maintenance and administration of Enterpise Linux systems. This is a hands-on, lab-intensive course. The objective is to prepare students to be proficient handling the tasks commonly faced by professional Linux System Administators.

Students completing the course may optionally take UMBC Training Centers' Linux Certified System Administrator Exam. Students who pass this exam will receive a UMBC TC Certified Linux System Administrator Certificate. Moreover, they will be very well prepared for the following industry certification exams: Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) and CompTIA Linux+.

This course uses the CentOS Linux Distribution. "CentOS is...derived entirely from the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) distribution. CentOS exists to provide a free enterprise class [Linux] computing platform and strives to maintain 100% binary compatibility with its upstream source, Red Hat. Target Student

This course is the recommended starting point for students with good computer skills, but with little or no Linux experience, who are interested in a career as a Linux System Administrator. Competent, certified Linux System Administrators are in high demand in both Corporate and Government IT Departments.

Prerequisites

Participants should have experience performing basic computer management tasks on a modern operating system such as Windows 7 or Mac OS X. Understanding of TCP/IP networking concepts is strongly recommended.

System Requirements

Students will need a computer with the following minimum specifications: 1.6 GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM, 30 GB free disk space, Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.5 or later, or Linux (contact us to verify supported Linux systems). Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 8 weeks.
