Overview

This course comprehensively covers the fundamental tools and concepts of Linux and Unix. The course's focus on proficient use of the command line benefits all skill levels. Beginners develop a solid foundation in Linux and Unix, while advanced users discover patterns and fill in gaps in their knowledge. The course provides extensive hands-on experience. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 6) is used in class.

Topics include: basic file manipulation; basic and advanced filesystem features; I/O redirection and pipes; text manipulation and regular expressions; managing jobs and processes; vi, the standard Unix editor; automating tasks with shell scripts; managing software; secure remote administration; the X Window system, and more.

This course is the recommended starting point for students with minimal or no Linux experience who are interested in pursuing the CompTIA Linux+ or the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) Certifications.

Prerequisites

Participants should have experience performing basic computer management tasks on a modern operating system such as Windows XP, Windows 7, or Mac OS X.
