Application Deadline
The starting date for the 2013 - 2014 class is Tuesday July 9, 2013.
Applications for the 2014 - 2015 class will be accepted as of June 1, 2013.
The application deadline for the program is January 31st.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition for the July 2013 through August 2014 class is $19,495.00. Additional fees include:
Registration Fee: $250
Lab Fee: $500
Background Check: $48
Drug Screen: $40
Although changes in fees are ordinarily announced in advance, UMBC Training Centers reserves the right to make such changes without previous announcement.
Admissions Procedure
It is mandatory for all applicants to attend a Sonography Information Session before applying for acceptance into the program.
To apply, the following items must be received by the application
deadline:
- Submit application and appropriate application fee.
Please indicate your specialty of interest (Ex: Cardiac) and indicate a second choice on the application (Ex: Vascular) in the case that placement becomes full in that specialty.
- Sealed transcripts from previous colleges/universities,
including prerequisite classes. Applicants can be in progress for up to two prerequisite courses at time of application, but must provide proof of registration via a receipt or transcript at time of application. If student is offered acceptance into the program, it will be pending the receipt of the final grades (must be a “C” or better to count) and official transcripts upon completion.
- International students must submit a copy of their foreign transcripts to the program and send their original transcripts from secondary school and college to World Education Services (WES) for a course by course evaluation to transfer credits and grades to U.S. equivalent. An official report must be sent directly to the UMBC Sonography Program. A fee will be incurred through WES.
Two Applicant Appraisal Forms (Adobe
Acrobat reader required) from someone, other than a family member, who can evaluate your work/study habits, conduct/behavior,
reliability/competence
- An essay on the following topic - Sonographer Credentialing (checked for grammar, content, and correct form).
The essay should be approximately one page (300 words), typed, double-spaced, containing 3-4 paragraphs, and bibliography with at least 2 references. Faxed copies of essays will not be accepted. Originals must be mailed or submitted electronically to info@umbctraining.com. Please type “applicant essay” in the subject box of your e-mail message. This is the new essay topic for students applying for the class of 2014-2015.
- Submit completed
volunteer form documenting 40 volunteer hours in a healthcare setting such as patient representative, waiting room volunteer, volunteer in a medical office, nursing home volunteer, Red Cross volunteer, missions trip or externship that involved medical assistance to the needy, etc. Applicants employed in the Allied Health field do not need to perform volunteer hours, but will need proof of current employment or previous employment in writing.

reserves the right to reject applications that are incomplete.
Selection Process
Following a review of all applications by the admissions office, qualified applicants who have submitted a complete application will be selected for an interview with the UMBC DMSP Selection Committee. Applicants invited to interview will be notified in March, and will be required to schedule their interview with the Program Chair during the months of March and April.
Applicants are accepted based on the following requirements:
- GPA of 3.0 or higher and academic history
- Interview with members of the Selection Committee
- Quality of essay
- Applicant appraisals and recommendations
- Accepted applicants will be notified by the end of April.

- All Anatomy and Physiology courses must include a lab.
The only substitution for Human Anatomy is Human Biology I and II with
a lab.
- Physics does not require a lab. Introductory, applied,
or general Physics are accepted.
- Mathematics courses must include fundamental Algebra and Geometry concepts. Statistics is required as a separate course.
- All prerequisites may be included in the 60 college
credits required to apply for the program. If any prerequisites were
not met as part of a degree program, they must be completed prior to
applying for the program.
- All prerequisite courses MUST receive a grade of “C” or better to count towards the program, including transfer classes.
Student Loans
UMBC Training Centers does not accept federal loans or grants and does not provide financial assistance, however, it does work with SallieMae, which provides loans for career training.
