2. Postings
The following
postings discussed and approved:
3. Tabled Postings:
The following tabled
postings will be removed from the Undergraduate Council's agenda until the
Departments submit the requested information.
-
GES
319: Watershed Science and Management (New Course) - The UGC table
GES 319 since the nature of the readings was unclear. The UGC also also
wanted to know since this is intended as a bridge between 100-level GES
courses and GES 411, 416, and 419, will it serve as a prerequisite for
those courses?
-
-
Is it
open only to student athletes? There are no prerequisites, but the
description mentions student athletes, and students are required
to interview their coaches and captains, suggesting it would be
just for student athletes.
-
If a
team captain takes the course, does he or she perform a self-interview?
-
We saw
no way to judge academic content or rigor.
-
There
are other ways to accomplish what this course is to do, e.g., through
a series of seminars and workshops for students.
-
This contributes
to the separation of athletes from the rest of the student body.
-
INDS
already has a leadership course.
The UGC briefly discussed
the ROTC courses and it was agreed that Nancy Miller would look further
into ROTC at Johns Hopkins, and specifically, into two questions:
-
Do ROTC
courses count towards the degree at JHU, or are they treated in
a manner more in line with our institutional credits? Are ROTC grades
applied toward the GPA?
-
Have the
ROTC courses at JHU gone through an academic approval process, similar,
say, to our UGC?
Meeting adjourned until November
5, 2009.
