Insurance
All UMBC students are strongly encouraged to carry health insurance since unexpected medical expenses could jeopardize your ability to complete your studies here at UMBC. UMBC sponsors a health insurance policy which is available to all UMBC students who are enrolled in 6 or more credit hours.

Our current policy is through The Chickering Group, an Aetna Company. Click here for more information about the insurance policy which available through UMBC. An application is available at this site as well.

Be sure to check with your insurance company to find out whether or not they will cover services provided at UHS. We are a participating provider with several insurance companies. Please call our Insurance Specialist at 410-455-1556 to determine whether or not UHS participates with your plan.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS who have F-1 or J-1 visas are REQUIRED to have health insurance that meets UMBC requirements. Those requirements are as follows:

  1. a minimum of $50,000 (US) coverage per accident or illness.
  2. a maximum $500 annually $50 per accident or illness that you must pay before the insurance pays. This is a deductible.
  3. a maximum of 12 months for which the insurance will not cover health problems that you had before buying the policy. This is a pre-existing condition.
  4. a minimum of $10,000 (US) for you return to your home country if you were to become very ill while studying at UMBC. This is medical evacuation.
  5. $7500 (US) to return your body to your home country if you were to die while you are in this country. This is repatriation.

International students' accounts will be billed for the UMBC health insurance plan at the beginning of each semester that you are enrolled at UMBC. If you have health insurance from another source that meets these requirements, you MUST submit proof of insurance coverage to UHS at the beginning of each semester. The documents that you submit must show dates of coverage and well as a description of coverage that can be compared to the above-listed requirements. Proof of insurance coverage must be submitted in ENGLISH. After receiving your insurance information, UHS will determine whether or not your policy meets our requirements. If it does, the insurance charges will be removed from your bill.
