WHAT?Hot: Living Through the Next Fifty Years on Earth by Mark Hertsgaard

WHY? The New Student Book Experience welcomes you to academic life at UMBC and to the way in which diverse disciplines in the arts and sciences are interrelated. The August book discussion gives you the opportunity to meet other first year students and make connections with faculty.

WHEN? Discussion sessions will be held during Welcome Week, which occurs prior to the start of classes in the fall. Additional related events will take place throughout the year.

WHERE? Discussions will take place during Welcome Week on Monday, August 26th from 3:00PM - 4:00PM (See your welcome week leader for locations). Discussion will continue in your English 100 class.

HOW? Buy the book (available in the UMBC Bookstore on the first floor of the Commons for 30% off list price) and read it over the summer.

  • Participate in discussion groups during Welcome Week, which are lead by faculty and staff volunteers. There, you’ll discuss the topics in the book and consider the questions they raise about our society and its current ethical climate.
  • You will also have the opportunity to discuss and write about the book in English 100, and to enter the Book Experience Writing Contest. Details for the 2010-2011 contest are to be announced. Until then, please read summaries of the prior winning essays.
