More information about summer tuition and fees can be
found at the Office of Summer, Winter, and Special Programs.

Optional Components

  • Housing = $850 (approximate cost - actual cost may vary slightly: optional to live on campus - students may also commute)
  • Food = $650 (approximately $25 per day includes breakfast, lunch and dinner and excludes meals covered by the program fee while on trips)

** We strongly encourage you to consider the option of living on campus due to the time commitment of the program and the bonding that takes place between students within the residence halls.  Please consider this option if it is feasible for your situation.  We understand this may not be an option for all students depending on your financial and personal circumstances and participation in CSI does not require you to live on campus. Please indicate your desire to live on campus when you fill out your CSI Application.

Book Scholarship

The Office of Undergraduate Education provides each CSI student with a book scholarship (up to $100) to cover the cost of books for ONE course during CSI. Students have the option to take two courses during the CSI program but only the cost of books for one course will be covered and students will need to purchase the books for their second course. A supplemental text and planner will be provided to every CSI student. These can be used during the CSI program and throughout their first year at UMBC.

Financial Aid

"Financial aid is greatly limited during the summer term. Students must be enrolled for summer courses through the CSI program and demonstrate significant financial need per the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for financial aid during CSI. Students with significant financial need are those who qualify for the Federal Pell Grant. For more information about financial assistance during the summer, or to see if you qualify, please contact Stephanie Johnson, Director in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at sjohn@umbc.edu or (410) 455-1517."

A limited number of scholarships are available for students participating in the CSI program based on financial need. Only students that have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application on file with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships can qualify for these scholarships. If you have completed your FAFSA and would like to be considered for a CSI scholarship, please send a brief statement detailing your financial need for the program to Laila Shishineh, CSI Program Coordinator, at lailams@umbc.edu. Students will be notified if they are receiving a scholarship prior to the start of the CSI Program.
