Howard High School
When and why did you decide you wanted to attend UMBC?
I decided I wanted to attend UMBC in April 2012. I was torn between attending UMBC and a university in Nashville, TN. However, I decided on UMBC because it was much closer to home, it seemed like my ideal sized school, and it was cheaper. I don’t regret my choice at all.
How did you hear about the Discovery Scholars Living Learning Community (DS LLC)?
I heard about the Discovery Scholars Living Learning Community when I was filling out my housing application.
Why did you decide to participate in the DS LLC?
I decided to apply to the DS LLC when I was signing up for housing. I submitted my application with the hope that the DS LLC would help me to determine my ideal career choice.
Did you know anyone else in Discovery Scholars when you started? Have you made friends through the program?
I knew two people in Discovery Scholars when I started. However, I did not know anyone well, so this program helped me make many new friends. Discovery Scholars is like one big family. Everyone knows everyone, and people want to be involved. The energy is very positive and contagious.
What was the most interesting thing that happened during your first year at UMBC?
This past year, I had the opportunity to play guitar and sing for a couple of my classes, which was really fun. For one of my classes, I played a few of my original songs. There was a moment when everyone fell silent and just listened. That was a really cool feeling.
What was your favorite part of being part of Discovery Scholars?
My favorite part of being a part of Discovery Scholars is being completely immersed by people in the same situation as myself, still exploring what career is right for them.
In what ways did the DS LLC experience help you at UMBC?
The DS LLC experience helped me feel at home at UMBC. It also gave me the resources to determine my ideal career path.
Would you recommend DS LLC to other new UMBC students?
I would absolutely recommend the DS LLC to other new UMBC students! It has truly made my freshman year at UMBC better than I ever thought possible.
Tell us a few interesting things about yourself…?
My favorite food is crab. I have a black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do, and I am the oldest of three children. I rarely wear plain white socks and music is my passion. I like the acoustics in stairwells.
