UMBC’s residence halls offer a number of tailored living environments for students, called Living Learning Communities, that provide students with the opportunity to connect with other students in their field of study, or who share a common interest. For those students who enter the university without a declared major, a growing population at institutions nationwide, UMBC offers its Exploratory Living Learning Community.
Located this year on the first floor south of Patapsco hall, the Community is a great way for students to make a personal connection to the university, to faculty and staff, and to other students. They will have the opportunity to live and work with students who are also exploring the many fields of study at UMBC, and to take advantage of special programming designed to help them adapt to university life and make sound decisions. This experience has frequently helped students find their place at large universities, and has also contributed to students’ earning their degrees in a timelier manner and with greater confidence in their choices.
The coordinators of the Exploratory Living Learning Community make a special effort to ensure that students living in the Community have as many opportunities as possible to share classes, attend events together, and build a strong foundation for their community members’ growth and exploration. Community students will be enrolled together in at least one Introduction to an Honors University (IHU) course, designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the university’s opportunities, services, and tools. Additionally, there will be Community-specific programming, including presentations on self awareness, making successful transitions, and managing change, and decision-making; students will also be invited to attend service projects, group activities, campus lectures and athletic events together, in order to form a cohesive group with common experiences.
