The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning encourages research into the components of success at all levels of education. UMBC is among ten major universities selected by the Foundation to participate in the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) focus on Undergraduate Research. We bring to this effort significant success in promoting undergraduate engagement in research, scholarship, and creative endeavors. We seek to learn, as well, from the successes of other institutions.
The CASTL Program seeks to support the development of a scholarship of teaching and learning that: fosters significant, long-lasting learning for all students; enhances the practice and profession of teaching, and; brings to faculty members' work as teachers the recognition and reward afforded to other forms of scholarly work. 
UMBC has committed to three years of study of the practice of teaching and learning in collaboration with the CASTL Program. We expect to learn more about supporting faculty in their research mentor roles, expand the availability of undergraduate research opportunities, and share with others our successes.
