URCAD 2003
Participants

The 2003 URCAD was a campus-wide celebration of undergraduate research and creative achievement at UMBC. Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny, president of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and chair of the Boyer Commission on Educating Undergraduates in the Research University, served as the gala event's distinguished guest speaker. Dr. Kenny is widely recognized for her initiatives to build bridges between the academic and business communities and has also been active in business and education collaborations on workforce issues. One of Dr. Kenny's major concerns is the improvement of undergraduate education. In order to achieve this goal she established the Boyer Commission on Educating Undergraduates in the Research University to create a new model of undergraduate education for major research universities. Funded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the Commission in 1998 published Revinventing Undergraduate Education: A Blueprint for American Research Universities.

The 2003 URCAD Participants presented their work at a variety of exhibit locations including the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery, UC Ballroom and Fine Arts Building Corridor and Studio. The list of 2003 presenters and the titles of their presentations demonstrates the quality, quantity and breadth of student projects taking place at UMBC.
