Undergraduate Academic Policy Administration Specialist |
Dr. Nicole P. Roop is the Academic Standards and Policies Specialist in the Office of Undergraduate Education. In this position she oversees UMBC’s academic policies and procedures ensuring the academic integrity of the University.
Dr. Roop attended Shippensburg University, receiving her B.A. in Government with a minor in Sociology, her M.S. from Western Maryland College (renamed McDaniel College) in Counselor Education, and her Ed.D. from the George Washington University in Higher Education Administration. Her dissertation title was "Exploring the Existence of a Subculture of Student Leaders," and her research interests are in student culture and subcultures, high achieving students, and academic affairs. She has presented at regional and national conferences on these topics, and on healthy work habits and becoming involved in professional organizations. She also enjoys teaching seminar courses for students on professional and career development.
Previous to UMBC, Dr. Roop worked at University of Maryland, College Park as Associate Director for the Department of Aerospace Engineering, receiving its Department Staff Award in 2008 and 2009. Prior to this, she worked for UMCP as a Financial Aid Counselor and volunteered as an academic advisor to the department of Letters and Sciences. Nicole previously worked as an academic, career, and financial aid counselor for University of Maryland, University College predominantly serving non-traditional and military students, and in the Carroll County Public School System.
Dr. Roop was American College Personnel Association's Member-at-Large for Mid-level Professionals, serving on the Donna M. Bourassa Mid-Level Management Institute Advisory Committee and the Governing Board's Recruitment and Retention Committee. She is a past President and member-at-large of the Maryland College Personnel Association, a state division of ACPA. In 2008, she received MCPA’s Dedication to Professional Service award and their Outstanding Leadership Award in 2006. Nicole serviced on the Steering Committee for the 2010 ACPA Convention in Boston and on the 2008 ACPA Convention Planning Team in Atlanta.
Within ACPA, Nicole was a member of the directorate for the Commission for Academic Support in Higher Education, and is a general member of several other commissions and standing committees. She is also a member of the National Academic Advisors Association.
