What you can do right now

To be ready to submit a competitive proposal for an Undergraduate Research Award, you should be working now on these preliminary steps:

  • Start NOW, exploring areas of interest to you, identifying a supportive faculty member, and planning a research project.
    • Figure out how much time each week you could spend on research, and which times are best for you.
    • Approach faculty members to discuss research opportunities.
  • If you do not have a clear idea for a project or mentor, start by reading the faculty web pages for all factuly members in the department(s) of interest to you, or by talking with faculty teaching classes you are currently taking.
  • Participate as a subject in a research study; you will gain experience and help to suppot other students' research initiatives.
  • Applyin December or Januaryfor a research fellowship through the paid Summer Undergraduate Reserarch Fellowship SURF program.
  • Check out other summer research opportunities.
  • This spring, 36 students received Undergraduate Research Awards. Students who prepare and provide a strong proposal have a very good chance of being funded.
  • If you are already engaged in research, you may both apply for funding to continue this work next year and propose to present your work at Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day in April.
