Dance Majors
Auditions for scholarships for the dance program are held each
February. Students may register to audition in advance by calling 410-455-2179. Auditions are open to all potential UMBC
students. However, students who have applied and been accepted to UMBC will be given priority. While the department does
not hold special auditions for admission to the major, dance students must maintain good academic standing in their dance
courses and must receive a grade of B or better in Intermediate Modern Dance II (the "gateway" course for the major) to
continue their studies as a dance major.
Music Majors
In addition to the standard UMBC undergraduate application, all students wishing
to major in music must complete a music application form and perform an audition
before a faculty committee. Auditions are held each November, February (for
scholarship consideration) and April. Information about our audition requirements
can be found on the music
department Web site or by calling 410-455-2942.
The music department offers emphases in instrumental or voice performance,
music education, music technology, composition, jazz performance and performance/musicology.
As part of the audition process, students planning to pursue the composition
emphasis must submit scores for review by the composition faculty; students
planning to pursue the technology emphasis must submit a recording sample for
review by the technology faculty.
Theatre Majors
No audition or portfolio review is required unless you are applying for the Linehan Artist Scholars Program, the Fine Arts
Award or other merit scholarships. Students should, however, notify the department of their interest so they can be advised
and space be made available in the appropriate courses. For more information, contact the theatre department at 410-455-2959
or thtr_info@umbc.edu.
Visual Arts Majors
In addition to the standard UMBC undergraduate application, applicants who plan to major in visual arts must submit a
portfolio to the Department of Visual Arts. Portfolio review days are
scheduled by the department throughout the year. For more information contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and
Orientation at admissions@umbc.edu, 410-455-2291 or 800-UMBC-4U2.
