Spreading the Word
When I got to UMBC, I saw so much to be done and decided to get involved to make my mark.
I attended the Leadershape leadership conference where I met other students involved in on-campus
organizations. The biggest thing Leadershape did for me was to show me there was more to UMBC
than the athletic community and classes. When I found out more about the people involved in SGA
and what they did, I was surprised to find out how big of an impact students had on UMBC's community.
As a student-athlete, school spirit is very important to me. Wanting to increase spirit on UMBC's campus, I suggested Black and Gold Day to the SGA. With the help of other students, I got the day approved and now the bookstore offers a discount on all black and gold apparel on Fridays.
I am working to get more athletes involved in SGA and other areas of the UMBC community. The Student Athlete Advisory Committee is now an official organization which will help it to have the funds to put on more events and become a bigger part of the university. I hope this will help other students and athletes find a way to become more involved on campus.
With the end of soccer season, I look forward to helping with even more SGA events throughout the rest of the school year. I credit SGA and soccer for making my college experience successful so far.
There are many faculty members that I have met through being involved whose support I know I have. It is a great feeling when you know that you are involved in something bigger than yourself.
