Christie Finn

(A)broadening Horizons

My study abroad experiences have been invaluable to my growth as a student and an individual. My first study abroad was with the Honors College to Northern Italy. When the trip with the Honors College was over, I extended my stay for an extra month to study at an opera school near Milan where I researched the role of Susanna from Le Nozze di Figaro. I translated the entire opera so I would know exactly what I was saying and also what the other characters were saying to me. My research also involved studying the stylistic period of the opera and what singing was like during that period.

A year later, I studied auditioning techniques in Rome. Most recently, I studied French in Montpellier, France, living with a French family and attending language school. The mother and her four children, ranging in age from 13-22, learned as much about American culture as I learned about their culture. They could not understand the concept of a legal drinking age and were very curious to know if police officers actually ate donuts on the job.

I keep busy (in what time I have outside of practice rooms) working with Honors College freshmen as a team leader for the Honors Forum class. I help them become acclimated to the honors university environment, mentor them and am a part of their first experiences of college life.

As vice president of UMBC Students for Life and a member of the Newman Club, I am trying to make a difference by raising awareness and speaking out about issues that are important to my beliefs. I am also a member of a several performing ensembles at UMBC, including the Maryland Camerata, the UMBC New Music Ensemble and the Vocal Arts Ensemble.

Christie Finn is a member of the Honors College and the Linehan Artist Scholars Program. She is majoring in music with a concentration in classical voice. After completing her studies at UMBC, she plans to either go to graduate school or apply for a Fulbright scholarship to study in Europe. Either way, she wants to continue learning her art and creating her own musical art.
