Building Traditions
As president of the Student Events Board (SEB), I've found limitless opportunities
to become involved at UMBC. Since the university is relatively young, students
are able to take a lead role in building the traditions of the institution.
It's exciting to know that I could make such a lasting impact. Being a part
of the SEB has given me the freedom to expand my horizons and to further set
the stage for future students.
Students are encouraged to act on their passions to create a better UMBC for the community. Within the Office of Student Affairs, I was chosen to lead a task force to evaluate the current needs and resources available to homosexual, bisexual and transgender students. It was an experience that defined my role at UMBC and set the tone for my future endeavors. My friends and I had been strong advocates for the need of such a task force. UMBC gave me the chance to support a cause that I truly believe in, while teaching me to be an effective leader.
UMBC has contributed to my character, growth and aspirations. I've been able to express myself through my academics and extra-curricular activities. I've been a teaching assistant for the First Year Seminar class of Sexuality, Rights, and Health; a researcher through my honors thesis in sociology; a student relief aid for Alternate Spring Break in New Orleans; and a peer advisor in the Student Involvement Center. UMBC has filled me with experiences and knowledge that will never leave me.
Eric is majoring in psychology and sociology and is the president of the Student Events Board. After graduation, Eric plans to pursue a Ph.D. in sociology, teach and conduct research at a university.
