Pursuing a Dream
What I find most exciting about UMBC is being immersed in an environment where everyone has a drive and is focused on achieving a goal, whether it is going on to the top M.D./Ph.D. program in the nation or breaking a school record in track.

Being an athlete enriches my experience at UMBC. With track as an outlet from the academic stresses, I am able to escape some of the academic pressures to have fun and compete at practice and meets. Track has also broadened my social network beyond engineering and science majors to all types of scholars.

As the third Meyerhoff Scholar in my family, I have been prepared academically and professionally to make a positive impact on whatever field I choose to select as a career. Even more important is that ÒselectÓ implies choices; my preparation gives me many choices for the future. I am now faced with the great choices of graduate schools that I was hoping to have as a high school senior. My preparation at UMBC will serve me well as I go on to graduate school and look to become involved with the astronaut program as a researcher or even an astronaut.

Isaac is a Meyerhoff Scholar, mechanical engineering major, member of the UMBC track team and treasurer of the UMBC chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. He is also a motivational speaker for NASA Sharp Students, participates in an NAACP outreach program to encourage and motivate minority youth and plays cello. He was the 2007 Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar of the Year.
