Seeing the World through Different Eyes
As far back as I can remember, I've wanted to travel the world. So as a junior at UMBC, I jumped at the chance to attend Edith Cowan University in Australia, where I took classes in Aboriginal studies, Australian animals, critical thinking and social and political philosophy. I also traveled around the continent, visiting an Aborigine and wildlife park, scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef and skydiving in the southwest.

Studying abroad was a fantastic cultural experience. I got to know students from around the globe. I was exposed to many other cultures, and came to understand how others live, work and what they believe. It also made me very aware of how others viewed me as an American.

Much like my experience abroad, being the first male in the Center for Women and Information Technology (CWIT) scholars program has shaped the way I see the world. The small number of women going into IT is a very serious problem. The way I look at it, the issue is not about women but about gender equality. When I enter the workforce, I will be much more in tune with the gender issues around me, putting me in a better position than most to make a positive change.

Josh is an information systems major and the first male to be selected as a CWIT scholar.
