Bringing Art to Life
Typically, when people go to a museum, they pause at a sculpture in one spot for a few seconds and move on. The Matisse project I
worked on at UMBC's Imaging Research Center (IRC) showed people how to look at sculpture-to walk around it and observe how the artist
used the space, and how the form looks different from various angles. We made an interactive 3D model of Matisse's Aurora using a
program called Virtools. The user can rotate the sculpture or lights with an arcade track ball and change the way it is shaded with
arcade buttons.
As an IRC Fellow I have had the opportunity to collaborate on large projects with my classmates as well as with outside parties. Last semester we worked with middle school students in the Wide Angle Media program in Baltimore to produce a cut-out, stop-motion animation. This semester we are working with the editorial cartoonist KAL to create an animated piece on voting.
Working in the IRC has definitely taught me what it is like in the real world. I have attended business meetings, experienced the pressure of deadlines and worked as part of a team.
Katie Chrzanowski is a visual arts major with concentrations in animation and interactivity. She is also getting minors in computer science and art history and hopes to find a job in video games, motion graphics, web design or animation.
