History Buff
When I visited UMBC, I was drawn to the way I saw faculty interacting with students. Now, I am a
Humanities Scholar at UMBC and I'm proud to say so.
The humanities program here is smaller than at larger universities, but then again, I wouldn't want to take an Introduction to History class in a lecture hall filled with 200 students. As a freshman, I remember being amazed that I was having hour-long conversations with my professor after class. And being a Humanities Scholar has helped me meet people with similar interest and passions. This type of support and community would be hard to find at a larger university.
I'm now doing an internship with the Oral History Center interviewing Chesapeake Bay fisherman, whose lifestyles are changing with new and better technology. What I'm doing is considered a new branch of historical methodology. I collect, research and document historical stories from people who have lived an experience. I'm gaining knowledge in a field of history that is usually reserved for graduate students. And I owe it all to my faculty mentor.
Mike is pursuing a double major in history and ancient studies. He has competed in the national championship as the captain of the UMBC Academic Quiz Bowl team.
