Carving His Own Path
I transferred to UMBC from Montgomery College mainly because I was impressed by its strong science programs as well as the emergency health services program. I ultimately found my home in the interdisciplinary studies department where I was able to design my own major titled: “Issues in Emergency Healthcare.” My transfer experience was straightforward and hassle-free. I took advantage of the easy transition to really get involved on campus.

I became an orientation team leader and honors peer counselor, helping students make the transition from high school to the UMBC honors college by encouraging involvement, assisting honors students in finding resources to answer academic-related questions and answering questions about college life. I also share my transfer experiences and thoughts as a transfer orientation speaker and a transfer representative for the UMBC Honors College Council. One of my favorite experiences at here has been working as a team emergency medical technician (EMT) for the ice hockey, rugby and soccer club teams.

What often goes unmentioned is how my campus involvement – the Honors College, Interdisciplinary Studies Council of Majors – and my time as an EMT have shaped my concept of integrative learning and community service which has evolved into a lifestyle choice, a commitment to support my immediate community and society with everyday choices overlooked by most. In addition to my academic growth, I feel that what has made my undergraduate experience at UMBC so fulfilling is the exposure to a diversity of experiences and interaction with people of varying academic and cultural backgrounds brought together as one distinctive and exceptional academic community.

Murteza is majoring in interdisciplinary studies and plans to pursue medical school as his next course of study.
