Preparing for an M.B.A.
At UMBC, I found my home in the economics department. Focusing your studies in a specific discipline is a great way to pursue a
business-related degree. Many employers and top-tier business schools look for a specialization, as opposed to a generic
business degree. The economics program is giving me the skills and real-world experience that I need to accomplish my dream of
earning an M.B.A.
I am interning at Mercantile. I was one of only a dozen students selected for the program, and in the first group of interns hired from UMBC. I work in Commercial Loan Documentation Review department where I'm responsible for processing business loan files and doing commercial loan reviews. It is exactly the kind of experience I was looking for.
My classes have exposed me to business practices of major companies across the world; everything from management to marketing. Many of these classes counted toward my certificate. The department makes it easy to coordinate the major in economics with a variety of preprofessional certificates. This gives you the option to specialize in various areas of business, like M.B.A. preparatory studies, accounting or managerial science. UMBC has really opened my eyes to the world of corporate finance.
Pamela is majoring in economics with a certificate in M.B.A. preparatory studies. After graduation, she plans to work for a major financial company in investment wealth management and enroll in an M.B.A. program.
