Learning at an Honors University

At UMBC, learning takes place in many different ways and in a variety of settings. Students discover an environment with a strong undergraduate liberal arts and sciences focus. A medium-sized public research university, UMBC provides students with opportunities to get hands-on research experience working with professors at the top of their fields. The university's academic reputation and industry partnerships help to place students in promising careers and leading graduate programs. In fact, one-third of UMBC students immediately go on to such leading graduate or professional schools as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Yale and Stanford.

• The computer science and electrical engineering department has close ties with such nearby centers of research as NASA/Goddard Space flight Center, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Security Agency.

• Visual arts students take advantage of research and professional training in UMBC's state-of-the-art Imaging Research Center. Students work on 3D animation projects for the Smithsonian Institute, Baltimore Museum of Art, Discovery Channel and PBS.

• The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology ranks UMBC first nationally in the total number of undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry degrees awarded to African Americans.

• The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a $400,000 grant to UMBC to help fund a Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture project “For All the World to See: Visual Culture and the Struggle for Civil Rights,” a traveling exhibition curated by Maurice Berger, research professor.

• Through the work of The Shriver Center, UMBC has become a national leader in promoting service learning, civic engagement and community-based service delivery.
