Location
UMBC is located on 500 acres, 15 minutes from Baltimore's Inner Harbor and 30 minutes from Washington, D.C. BWI Airport is five minutes away, as are AMTRAK and light rail stations. University-run Shuttle buses provide regular transportation to points in the surrounding area and Baltimore City.

Academic programs
43 majors, 41 minors and 20 certificate programs in the physical and biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences, engineering, mathematics, information technology, humanities and visual and performing arts.

Graduate School
33 master's degree programs, 24 doctoral degree programs and 20 graduate certificate programs in education, engineering, imaging and digital arts, information technology, gerontology, life sciences, psychology, public policy and others.

Arts & Cultural Events
UMBC is home to two art galleries (the Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture and the Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery) and two professional dance companies (the Phoenix Dance Company and Doug Hamby Dance). Guest artists and faculty are presented in dozens of music, theatre and dance performances each year. The Humanities Forum and Social Sciences Forum lecture series bring eminent scholars to UMBC throughout the year.

Athletic programs
More than 400 student-athletes compete in 19 NCAA Division I sports. The UMBC Retrievers participate in the America East Conference. Facilities include a 4,000-seat stadium and track and field complex, the 3,500-seat Retriever Activities Center (RAC) Arena, an indoor and outdoor aquatics complex, tennis courts, a soccer stadium, baseball and softball fields and practice fields.

Recently, both the men's and women's basketball teams and the men's lacrosse team have made it to their respective NCAA tournaments. The men's and women's swimming teams are perennial favorites in their conferences.
