Humanities Scholars' Experience

All first-year Humanities Scholars take two seminar-style interdisciplinary classes which help them form a close-knit cohort group. In their sophomore year, scholars begin preparing for the school-funded semester abroad that they undertake in their junior year. Students select a study abroad program that matches their academic and career goals and return from the semester abroad with changed perspectives and a renewed enthusiasm for the humanities.

Humanities Scholars are encouraged to participate in UMBC's Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day during which they present an in independent research project. Every semester the Center for the Humanities hosts a lecture series that features prominent thinkers and scholars in philosophy, history, culture, language, literature and the arts. Each year, the Humanities Scholars program hosts dinners for students to meet and share ideas with visiting lecturers.

In Their Own Words

Jack Mullee
"My most important experience within the program was the five months I spent in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Though my primary intention had been to learn Spanish, I quickly fell in love with the country’s culture and complex history. I am hoping to receive a grant to return to study there. I give credit to the Humanities Program for helping me acquire the skills I need for my particular goals. Opportunities I thought unattainable are opening up all around me."
