James Bailey - History

This region is ideal for exploring my passion for American history. I have worked as a park ranger at Fort McHenry, participated in Civil War reenactments and conducted research in local historical societies. This year I completed a major research project on the Romney campaign—an important, but relatively unexplored, chapter of the civil war.

My research approach was intentionally broad; I wanted to examine all aspects of the campaign. Using resources in the National Archives as well as regional libraries, historical societies and museums, I explored the diaries and correspondence of soldiers and civilians involved in the campaign. I also conducted field investigations and during one, uncovered a battle site believed to have been lost for 140 years!
